Andrew Villamagna, MD FAAP

Dr. Andrew Villamagna came to medicine by way of engineering. He spent roughly a decade as a chemical engineer working in large-scale process modeling and optimization before earning his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine — the Medical College of Virginia — in 2006. He trained in family medicine at the University of Wisconsin’s residency program in Appleton, Wisconsin, and is board certified in Family Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a distinction earned beyond board certification for years of teaching, service, and commitment to the specialty.
He began his career as a National Health Service Corps scholar, a commitment he made to care for underserved patients before he ever set foot in medical school. In the seventeen years since residency, his practice has centered on older adults and on the kind of primary care that keeps people out of the hospital rather than treating them after they land there. The engineering never left him. He wants to know why something is happening, not just what to prescribe for it — which in practice means shortening medication lists instead of lengthening them, paying close attention to balance, memory, hearing, and mobility, and catching the small changes that come before a fall. He has also taught the next generation of clinicians, including as an adjunct professor in the University of South Florida’s advanced nursing program.
Outside the office, Dr. Villamagna is most often walking the dogs with his wife, Lisa, or out fishing with his faithful Labrador, Tello. He has never fully stopped being an engineer, and still spends his evenings tinkering with inventions. He believes the best medicine starts with being unhurried enough to actually listen, and that no patient should ever leave an appointment unsure of what was decided or why.
